Understanding the

Application Timeline

Oct 1
Applications Open

Applications for the 2027–28 school year open Thursday, October 1, 2026. Prospect Schools are free, public schools, and any New York family can apply. There is no admissions test. Some children receive a preference in the lottery, including children who live in the school's district.

You can apply to more than one Prospect school. Kindergarten, 6th, and 9th grade enter by lottery. For grades 1 through 5, 7, 8, and 10, your application places your child on the waitlist. Start your application or see how the lottery works.

Oct - Mar
Visit & Learn

Tour any Prospect school, come to an open house, or meet our team at a community event in your neighborhood. On a tour, you see classes in session and meet the school's leaders. Tours run through March, so families who have already applied can visit before the lottery. Visiting is not required to apply. See upcoming tours.

Offers & Events

The lottery runs Friday, April 2, 2027. Offers begin going out in early April. If your child receives an offer, you accept and register in SchoolMint, and your school will contact you to help with each step. Families with an offer are invited to visit in April and May for a Day in the Life, an open house, or a welcome reception. If your child is on a waitlist, their place holds. Seats are offered in waitlist order as they open.

Jul - Aug
Rolling Offers

Seats that open over the summer are offered to waitlisted families in order. Keep your phone number and email current in SchoolMint so we can reach you quickly.
