Our Story: Then & Now

HISTORY:

In 2007, two Brooklyn fathers and educators hatched a plan to open a new middle school in their neighborhood of Park Slope. They recognized that their community needed more quality school options and sought to open one that would be distinguished by its focus on diversity and academic rigor. Over the course of many shared car rides to Columbia Teachers College in Upper Manhattan, the idea for Brooklyn Prospect Charter School was born.

On September 8, 2009, we opened our doors with 100 sixth grade students. Since then, we’ve grown to five campuses across Brooklyn serving kindergarten through twelfth grade, and we have an amazing team of over 300 employees who help our 1,500+ student body learn, grow, and succeed every single day.

TODAY:

Prospect Schools is deeply committed to becoming an anti-racist organization. 2020 has compelled us to hold up a mirror to our organization and see that there are more intentional actions we can take to drive sustainable change over time. These actions begin with our senior leadership team and incorporate our board, our school-based leadership teams, faculty, staff, our student body, and families. Together, we will provide spaces to better understand and address racism and anti-racism in ways that lead to cultural and systemic changes.

APPLY TODAY

We believe families shouldn't have to choose between strong academics and a diverse community.

We know that to succeed in the 21st century, high school graduates must understand other cultures and viewpoints, and emerge from the K-12 experience as flexible, critical thinkers. The key tenets of our program are:

Diversity

By thoughtfully serving students and families from all backgrounds — racial, cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic — we create learning environments where students can gain a deep understanding of the ways in which alternative perspectives drive innovation and creativity. We are a proud founding member of the Diverse Charter Schools Coalition.

World Class Academics

An IB world school, Brooklyn Prospect models its curriculum on the renowned International Baccalaureate Program. This rigorous program raises the level of academic responsibility for our students and serves as an important indicator of their capacity for success in college and beyond.

Excellent Teaching

Our teachers are highly skilled in their content areas and are constantly improving their craft. They are committed to the Brooklyn Prospect mission and excel as enthusiastic collaborators and engaged community members.
