Advocacy Day 2010Submitted by admin on February 8th, 2010 2:11 pm
On Tuesday, February 2, close to a dozen Brooklyn Prospect students and their parents traveled by bus to Albany for an official Day of Advocacy for the State’s Charter Schools. In the Conventional Hall, the group joined other parents and students from across New York to hear from several supportive lawmakers, including Gov. Paterson himself, who expressed his commitment to charters. The kids proudly displayed the banner they had created with the help of Ms. Walsh, and which subsequently took 2nd prize among all charter banners that day, earning $500 and bragging rights for the Brooklyn Prospect community. The highlight of the visit was a crowded meeting with State Sen. Velmanette Montgomery, who listened to the concerns of our students and parents, as well as those of the other charter schools in her district. The message to Sen. Montgomery was loud and clear: our charter schools need better funding and support. Sen. Montgomery agreed to visit Brooklyn Prospect to see for herself what we are accomplishing. We will arrange for that visit as soon as possible. In the meantime, it is critical that all interested BP parents and students take the time to write a letter to Sen. Montgomery to share their enthusiasm for our program and their concern for the future of charter schools. A template for such a letter will be circulated soon. ( categories: )
