 Dear Newspaper Staff,

Please leave any comments below related to how we should publish the newspaper.  How could we create a print version?  What about an internet version?  Should we have both?  Does it make sense to create 2 divisions?

Thanks!

Cryptography!

Submitted by Ms. Michael on October 14th, 2009 10:12 am

In class today and tomorrow, students are working on encrypting messages using a multiplicative cipher.  In class, we used a multiplicative key of 3.  To decode a message created with this key, you would follow the same procedure but would multiply by 9 instead of by 3.  What do you think the strengths of this encoding system are?  Were there any letters that it didn't change?  Can you see why that is?

If you want to try encoding more messages at home, the website was www.cryptoclub.math.uic.edu.   Happy encrypting!

Some of you have noticed the freerice.com web page that is up on the computer at the back of my and Mr. Cetrulo's rooms.  Free rice is a web site through which you can answer math and other questions.  For each correct answer, 10 grains of rice are donated to the United Nations World Food Program.  For math, there is a basic math section that has pre-algebra questions and a multiplication facts section that is great for practicing your facts.  Check it out at www.freerice.com!
