New Clinton Hill Middle School

Clinton Hill Middle.

Serving Community School District 13, we opened Clinton Hill Middle this past September to our new 6th grade families in the heart of Brooklyn. Our new school is modeled after our Windsor Terrace program and is led by Brooklyn Prospect veterans from that campus: Jackie DeLuca and Kim Raccio. 

Executive Director Dan Rubenstein, awardee of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics, is back in the classroom!

Clinton Hill Middle's temporary home base is located at 300 Willoughby Avenue, Brooklyn. We are so delighted to be located in Clinton Hill's wonderful local neighborhood while our new, permanent facility is under construction at 1100 Fulton Street just down the road. We expect to relocate to our permanent campus there in 2018. 


Alumni Spotlight: Naomi Augustin, '16

"I believe that the greatest benefit of being a Brooklyn Prospect is your ability to care for one another and the community around us", says Naomi Augustin, a 2016 Brooklyn Prospect graduate and current freshman at Clark University. "After my first week of classes, I am very surprised as to how similar or less difficult college work is compared to the IB [International Baccalaureate]."

Over the summer we reached out to some of our college-bound graduates to get their take on BPCS after having started their first week of school. Read all about Naomi's experience in this issue of Brooklyn Prospect's newsletter: 

Q: What was your biggest fear before attending BrooklynProspect? 
Naomi: When I began Brooklyn Prospect, my biggest fear was making new friends and joining a new community I knew nothing about. I remember the first day of classes in 6th grade when I walked into the auditorium. I was surprised to see not only people of my color but also young and energetic teachers. It did not take to long to create friendships with my peers that have lasted to this day.

Q: What was your favorite part of being a Brooklyn Prospect student?
Naomi: My favorite part about having been a Brooklyn Prospect student is now bragging about how diverse it is. The IB, though challenging at times, has also really prepared me for college. After my first week of classes, I am very surprised at how similar and so far less difficult college work is compared to the IB diploma program. 

I believe that the greatest benefit of being a Brooklyn Prospector is your ability to care for one another and the community around us. I believe that without the help of my peers and the extra time my teachers take out to ensure that we understand the material, I would not be where I am today. 

Q: If you were to recommend us to your best friend, what would you say?
Naomi: I would say that if you want to conform to society's expectation of you academically, then maybe BPCS isn’t the right fit for you. However, if you are hoping to excel in school and want a bright future with a diverse community supporting you all the way, then, BPCS is the perfect fit for you. After hearing the experience of my college peers that attended various different schools, I am eternally grateful for being part of the BPCS community. I believe that even though if you are new to BPCS, sooner or later, you will be a Brooklyn Prospector.


 #PathtoPossible March in Prospect Park

An estimated 25,000 parents, students, educators, and city leaders came together in Prospect Park on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 to support NYC's charter schools. Brooklyn Prospect's own Dawson Desire '17, gave a special speech to the crowd to explain why he and his family rallied in support of ensuring a great school for every student who needs one. Read the full transcript here.


A New Teaching Residency Partnership

Teach with us! Brooklyn Prospect is partnering with New York University's Steinhardt School to launch the Embedded Master of Arts in Teaching (EMAT) degree.

This 13-month, full-time, embedded teacher residency program will bring NYU EMAT students to our campus for a full time residency while taking online course instruction that prepares teachers to be effective with all learners.  Successful candidates will be eligible for teaching certification in New York State. Link here to find out more.

The Taylor twins’ school days begin on the F line in Brooklyn. Class starts at 9 a.m., but the twins are usually early. Sometimes they’re on the train by 6:30 a.m. for early sports practice. Though not identical, both are tall and athletic and smile easily, so their classmates often mix them up. They keep their grades high. Khadejah aims to always score above 80 on exams and Yazmine is only satisfied if she scores at least 90. Overall, they operate as a team: What one misses, the other will pick up. Their mother, also a twin, calls it a “twin thing.”

The family members’ racial and ethnic identities illustrate complexities that demographic data often fails to capture. Lino’s parents came from Honduras in the 1960s. So, on official forms, the twins check the Hispanic box, but in conversation they mostly refer to themselves as black. Their father, who has one parent from the American South and one from the West Indies, identifies as black. The family is Muslim, and Lino wears a hijab. “When people see me they are like, ‘Oh, she’s Muslim.’ Then I start speaking Spanish, and there’s a whole other spiel of questions.”

Lino and Taylor had several reasons for seeking a diverse school for their daughters. They have happy memories of their own experiences at elementary and middle school in Brooklyn’s Gowanus neighborhood, where they met. The school enrolled a mixture of Italian, Middle Eastern, Hispanic, and black children, Lino says. She didn’t want her daughters in classes where the students had never “seen a white child in the school.” And she thinks that ultimately a racially homogenous school is no preparation for life, because the real world is diverse. She considered it a plus that Brooklyn Prospect is a charter school, since she believes it is more innovative and adaptable and more likely to set high goals for students.

Our second middle school, Brooklyn Prospect Charter School - Clinton Hill Middle will open in in the fall of 2016. Thanks to the  the New York City Department of Education, we will be located for two years at 300 Willoughby Avenue, Brooklyn.  Our new, permanent facility is under construction at 1100 Fulton Street, Brooklyn, and is expected to be ready for use by the fall of 2018.Modeled after our Windsor Terrace Middle School and serving Community School District 13 (CSD13), BPCS Clinton Hill Middle will be led by two Brooklyn Prospect veterans: Jackie DeLuca and Kim Raccio.

Jackie DeLuca, Founding Middle School Principal

Jackie DeLuca, currently the head of our middle and high school literacy department, has been named principal of our newest school, Brooklyn Prospect Charter School - Clinton Hill Middle. As a literacy expert, Jackie’s leadership within our organization has brought the issue of student literacy to the forefront of our programs. Her impact across both our middle and high schools, has been life changing for our students.

Jackie joined Brooklyn Prospect Charter School in 2012 as a founding middle school reading intervention specialist. During her tenure at Brooklyn Prospect, she demonstrated tremendous leadership in orchestrating key strategic initiatives to improve the quality of reading and writing instruction across our middle and high schools. A seasoned educator and experienced administrator, Jackie understands the transformational impact that developing rich reading lives can have on young minds.

Jackie received her B.A. in psychology from Macalester College and her M.A. from Pace University, where she majored in middle school education and specialized in working with students with disabilities. Jackie’s deep understanding of the importance of student literacy was ignited early in her career when she served as a Teach for America Corps member at Mott Hall III Academy in the Bronx, and later as a founding special education teacher and special education coordinator at Achievement First East New York Middle School in Brooklyn.  Prior to joining Brooklyn Prospect, Jackie was also awarded a Michael Jordan Foundation grant, which she used to plan and orchestrate the full development of a middle school library, converted from a vacant classroom.

Jackie is currently undergoing rigorous preparation as a Relay Graduate School National Principals Academy Fellow, alongside former middle school principal and current Director of Academics, LaNolia Omowanile.

In the fall, Jackie will share leadership of BPCS- Clinton Hill Middle with Kim Raccio, BPCS K-12 Principal, New School Development. Our Clinton Hill Middle founding class of students and teachers will surely benefit from Ms. DeLuca’s knowledge, teaching experience, and determination to foster a warm and inviting educational environment.


Kim Raccio, Principal, New School Development

Kim Raccio joined Brooklyn Prospect Schools in 2012, as the founding principal of Brooklyn Prospect Charter High School.  During her first years at Brooklyn Prospect, Kim led the high school to become one of the few non-select New York City public schools authorized as an International Baccalaureate World School to offer the prestigious Diploma Program.

This school year, Kim is “cross-training” as a principal leader at our elementary school. Prior to joining Brooklyn Prospect, Kim served as the Assistant Head of Academics and founding academic director of the American Studies Program at the Kingham Hill School in Oxfordshire, U.K. Kim began her teaching career in Connecticut with Schooner, Inc., The Connecticut SeaGrant Program, as well as Hamden Hall Country Day School.

A globally minded educator who is passionate about innovative educational programs, Kim received her B.S. in biology from Southern State University and her M.A. in education leadership from the Teachers College at Columbia University. She is currently pursuing her Ed.D in International Education at the University of Bath (UK).  She also serves on accreditation teams for the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and is a private consultant specializing in UK/US hybridized educational programs.

Kim is excited to use her founding, teaching, and leaderships skills to support program development at Brooklyn Prospect Charter School - Clinton Hill Middle!

Kelly Vaughan, Science

A founding BPCS High faculty member, science teacher, and department head, Kelly has been on the Brooklyn Prospect team since 2009. Kelly graduated from Stanford University as well as the Columbia University Teacher's College. She is a former Fulbright Teacher, where she taught in Instanbul, and is a recipient of the ING Unsung Heroes Grant. 

Beatrice White, Mathematics

Was former faculty member of BPCS High, where she was a founding teacher. Beatrice returns to us as a faculty member of BPCS Clinton Hill Middle. Beatrice is a graduate of Carlton College as well as Colombia University Teachers College.

Jaime Pereira,  ELA Learning Specialist/Reading Intervention

Joins us from The Young Women’s Leadership School in Brooklyn where she served as the 7th grade team leader and an ICT teacher in 6th-10th grade ELA, Social Studies, and Science classes.

Danielle Camero, Learning Specialist & IEP Coordinator

Joins us from Achievement First ENY where she worked as a Learning Specialist and Guided Reading teacher. Previously a Special Education Teacher and SPED Coordinator at Democracy Prep, Danielle also lived and taught in Hawaii as a Teach for America Corps member.

Kim Cason, Dean of Students Joins us from Restoration Center of Hope where Kim served as the Youth Director. Previously a student advocate at Harlem Children’s Zone and the Assistant Director of Spring Creek After School.
Hyein DeGannes, Mandarin

Is fluent in Mandarin, Korean, and English, and holds degrees from Renmin University of China, NYU Steinhardt School Of Education, as well as an Advanced Certificate in Foreign Language Education. 

Ayinde George, Physical Education

Joins us from Packer Collegiate where he has worked for many years as long-term sub and coach of various sports teams. Ayinde is also a head coach with Park Slope United Soccer Club.

Lauren Gershkow, Math & Science Learning Specialist

Joins us from the International Community School in London where she worked as a Special Education teacher co-teaching the IB middle-years curriculum for all core subject areas. Previously a special education teacher at Tompkins Square Middle School in NY. Lauren also holds a masters degree in school counseling.

Grace Lindsey, Humanities

Has been a BPCS faculty member since 2015 in the humanities department. Grace is a graduate of Yale University, and is currently pursuing her masters degree at Relay Graduate School of Education. She has taught 3 summers with Breakthrough Collaborative.

Maria Amate Perez, Spanish

Currently a member of the MS faculty at BPCS Windsor Terrace Middle, teaching Spanish Phase I and a 6th grade advisor.

Brooklyn Prospect was recently featured in - a nonprofit, nonpartisan news site covering education in America. 


Brooklyn Prospect is part of a small group of charter schools now explicitly focusing on integration. The school, which serves grades K–12 at two Brooklyn campuses, one in Windsor Terrace, the other downtown, was founded in 2009 by Daniel Rubenstein. Brooklyn Prospect ensures an integrated setting via a weighted lottery: about one third of its students are economically disadvantaged and no racial group makes up a majority.

Visiting the school a few months ago, I was greeted by two seventh-grade students who described a strong, happy school community replete with great teachers, extracurriculars such as a filmmaking club, and classes like Mandarin Chinese.

Walking the hallways, I could see what they meant by “community:” Students of all different races could be seen working side-by-side or collaboratively in class. During that day’s lunch, students were randomly assigned seats in the cafeteria in order to foster bonding with peers with whom they might not typically interact.

This year's gala was truly a special evening filled with fun and excitement thanks to our spectacular silent auction items, a raucous live auction led by Chloe Waddington of Christies, our emcees Robert Vidal II (P'20) and Tiffany Lewis (P'16), the delectable food and cocktails, our incredible parent volunteers, and some impressive dancing made possible by DJ Parler’s expert spinning.

With your generosity, we exceeded our fundraising expectations for this event, providing over $65,000 of critical support for Brooklyn Prospect Charter School and its innovative educational and extracurricular programs.

Special thanks go to our wonderful Spring Gala Co-Chairs Jilian Gersten (P'26, P'28), Holly Halvarson (P'17), Amelia Kahaney (P'26), Kathryn Koegel (P'20, '21), Britt Morgan-Saks (P'27), and Cynthia Swartz (P‘17), who all worked tirelessly and generously took the reins of this celebratory parent fundraising event.
